Screen Balance Challenge

Welcome to the Screen Balance Challenge! Here will cover how it works and what to expect.

Before you can change your family’s screen habits, you need to know where things stand right now. How does your family spend time each day? Watch the daily video for context and ideas, then take the action below.

When reducing screen time for kids, it’s important to provide offline alternatives. In fact, focusing on what offline activities they enjoy will make it much easier to limit screen time without a fight. Ask your family - what (offline) activities do they enjoy that they wish they did more of? Watch the daily video for context and ideas, then take action!

Establishing successful family screen limits is all about consistency. And you have lots of options for how you consistently implement these screen limits. Two ways to categorize them are by time (amount of time, time of day, occasion, etc) and by zone (dinner table, bedroom, etc). Which rules work best for your household? Watch the daily video for context and ideas, then take the action.

Digital media and screens can be used in very beneficial, positive ways. But we can’t take for granted that kids need to learn how to use them responsibly. And not all screens are created equal. How will you make sure your family uses screens for good? Watch the daily video for context and ideas, then take action.

This is what we’ve been building towards! A big part of getting buy-in or avoiding fighting over screen time is to set expectations, establish a scheduled routine, and provide choices. A Family Media Plan can do all of these things. It sets the stage for long-term screen balance without the drama. What will be part of your family media plan? Watch the daily video for context and ideas, then take action.

Nowadays we hardly ever allow ourselves or our kids to be bored. That’s what digital devices are for, right? Except that boredom is a powerful tool that unlocks imagination, creativity, and problem solving. So how are you going to allow room for boredom in your home? Watch the daily video for context and ideas, then take action.

You made it to the last day! Hooray! Your final challenge is to schedule a full screen-free day. Whether your child is in desperate need of a digital detox or not, the whole family can benefit from a day away from screens. When will you have your unplugged day? What will you fill it with? Watch the daily video for context and ideas, then take action.
